I was at the gym and two elderly persons were talking about the world of today from their own perspective. The conversation was around how things were in the past compared to ever-evolving present times and the way technology is changing the world. It was a very interesting chat and all of a sudden one commented: «before you studied to progress, now you study not to fall behind» and this comment made me think.
«The world of today travels fast».

In the past decades people who studied at universities and got degrees were ahead from the rest in their professional careers. They had the privilege to study and were taking the lead; this reality gave birth to the idea of «study to progress». Indeed, that was a fact for many years, even decades. People coming out of universities were ahead professionally as well as economically were in much better position.
However, reality has changed in the recent years and it is now changing even faster. Going to universities is always a wise decision, however, as these elderly were saying «now you must learn in a daily basis not to fall behind». Nowadays, it is as if learning must occur in small dosis but every single day. Here, consistency becomes the key, explaining the success of the book «Atomic Habits», by James Clear. In the book, the author emphasises the idea of small daily progress rather than the «big» goal after five years in which the world has already changed.
More over, the ever-changing present sometimes requires to unlearn what we have learned or believed for years. The idea of unlearning old ideas or believes comes to the surface because they may not be serving any longer in the present times. The old information is replaced by new breakthrough, discoveries or the latest information. It looks «as if the new world made the old one obsolete». It was revealing how these two men who were in their eighties can see the world changing at such a pace and to never stop learning and making progress in life regardless of your age.
How fast am I moving to adapt to the world of today?
Am I growing myself enough «not to fall behind»?
Which areas do I need to focus on in order to be competitive in the world of today?
May you learn, grow and enjoy every day «not to fall behind with the world of today».
